Embracing Color Theory and Light: My Journey as an Artist

Rediscovering My Passion

After a two-year hiatus, picking up my paintbrush again was like reuniting with an old friend. During those years away from the canvas, I realized how much I missed expressing myself through art. This time, I was determined to be more intentional about my journey as a professional artist. I wanted to deepen my understanding of color theory, explore the interplay of light, and refine my skills in painting the subjects I love most: flowers.

The Decision to Learn More

To achieve these goals, I enrolled in the Milan Art Institute. This decision was pivotal in my artistic journey. The classes offered there provided a comprehensive foundation, from fundamental techniques to advanced concepts. I immersed myself in learning, embracing the opportunity to grow and evolve as an artist.

The Power of Color and Light

One of the most significant areas of focus for me has been color theory and the relationship between color and light. Understanding these elements is crucial for creating captivating artwork. Color theory goes beyond simply knowing which colors complement each other; it involves understanding the emotions and moods that different color combinations can evoke. Light, on the other hand, adds depth and dimension, transforming a flat image into a dynamic, lifelike piece.

Hone Your Craft

With my foundation solidified, I turned my attention to my true passion: painting flowers. I’ve always been drawn to the beauty and intricacy of florals, but I wanted to take my work to the next level. To achieve this, I decided to enroll in additional classes with a top artist who specializes in impressionistic florals. These classes have been instrumental in refining my technique, especially in capturing the essence of flowers in an abstract and impressionistic style.

Learning Patience in the Process

By nature, I am an impatient person, especially when it comes to painting. I’ve had to learn to give myself time to reflect and critique, to fine-tune details, and to truly discover who I am as an artist. This discovery is both a process over time and a realization in the present. I’ve come to appreciate the importance of patience and reflection in creating meaningful art.

Creating a Portfolio

Now, I am in the process of creating a 30-piece portfolio for graduation. This portfolio is a culmination of everything I’ve learned and a showcase of my unique artistic voice. Before diving fully into this project, I felt it was essential to further advance my skills. The additional classes have provided me with new perspectives and techniques, allowing me to create pieces that truly resonate with viewers.

Excitement for the Future

I am excited to continue on this journey and see where it leads. Every brushstroke is a step forward, a new opportunity to explore and create. I am grateful for the guidance and knowledge I’ve gained from the Milan Art Institute and the additional classes. This journey is not just about becoming a better artist; it’s about embracing the path that God has set for me and using my talents to bring beauty and joy into the world.

My Message Through Art

What I want to convey as an artist today is one of hope, encouragement, and joy. I aim to lighten someone’s load, bring a smile, and invoke joy through the strokes of my paintbrush and the beautiful language of art. I want to remind people of their worthiness and the beauty in the world around them.

As I continue to explore the interplay of color and light, I am reminded of the endless possibilities that art offers. Each painting is a new adventure, a chance to capture a moment, a feeling, a piece of the world around me. I look forward to sharing my work with others and continuing to grow as an artist.

Thank you for joining me on this journey. Stay tuned for updates on my portfolio and future projects. Your support and encouragement mean the world to me.

Warm regards,

Michelle Thompson
